Abstract
Reflexive markets are often treated as unpredictable because psychology and coordination appear chaotic. This paper shows that once you account for constraints shaping market behavior—liquidity depth, leverage limits, coordination bandwidth, institutional rules, and network structure—reflexivity becomes analyzable. I propose a field model where markets move along gradients in constraint and information fields, revealing when systems amplify behavior and when they snap back. This constraint geometry explains why bubbles grow slowly, collapses happen suddenly, and crises across decades share underlying patterns. The contribution is a unified framework transforming reflexive uncertainty into measurable structure.
Introduction
George Soros’s reflexivity theory and Keynes’s beauty contest identified genuine market phenomena—but these dynamics operate within a deeper constraint architecture. Understanding these constraints transforms reflexive markets from unpredictable systems into environments where capital flows can be anticipated even during extreme coordination episodes.
Markets coordinate around expectations rather than fundamentals, creating self-reinforcing feedback loops. Yet three major historical episodes—the dot-com bubble, 2008 financial crisis, and current AI infrastructure boom—reveal that reflexive dynamics consistently encounter hard limits. These boundaries arise from physical constraints (liquidity depth, balance sheet capacity), information-theoretic limits (coordination costs, common knowledge requirements), institutional mandates (fiduciary duties, risk management), and fundamental arbitrage constraints.
The interaction of these constraint layers creates predictable breaking points. This article develops the constraint framework theoretically, shows how it applies across domains, and demonstrates why constraints enable prediction even when psychology seems chaotic.
